Sports Development team

The Sports Development Service (SDS) is part of the Active Communities department at theCouncil.

It works in partnership with a number of different partners to coordinate opportunities forpeople to take part in sport and physical activities, as well as promoting the health benefits of an active lifestyle in line with local and national priorities.

Current initiatives

Cambridge Sports Network

The purpose of the CSN is to work co-operatively with the County Sports Partnership in order to increase participation in sport and physical activity and widen access to opportunities throughout Cambridge city.

“The CSN mission is to consolidate existing sport and physical activity provision and develop new opportunities to enable the people of Cambridge city to enjoy the benefits of leading a physically active life. It exists, to bring together under a common purpose, all agencies involved in providing opportunities for sport and physical activity within the city”.

Skills For Sport

Developed through the Cambridge Sports Network, these sessions provide sporting opportunities for 5-15 year olds. They are available at various locations across the City and activities range from multi-sport sessions to specific coaching in a range of sports.

Chesterton will be hosting both youth and adult sessions are part of Skills for Sports and Back to Sport (adult equivalent) so we look forward to seeing you there!

Aspire Sports Volunteer Scheme

ASPIRE to put something back, learn new skills AND make a difference… Volunteering is extremely rewarding, it is for everyone, and you do not need previous experience to take part. Anyone aged 14 or older can volunteer within sport. There are many current volunteering opportunities within sport that are linked to the Sports Development Service and beyond. Volunteers are defined as individuals responsible for co-ordinating and managing other volunteers, or for undertaking an administrative role within their sports club/organisation.

What can you expect from volunteering?

By becoming an Aspire volunteer, you can expect many opportunities from the programme including:

  • Advice and guidance from your volunteer co-ordinator.
  • Mentor and buddy support at your placement.
  • The profile of volunteers raised in the community
  • The opportunity to use your voluntary work as a way of gaining skills and work experience.
  • Continuous development pathway to accredited training.
  • The opportunity to improve your prospects for further education or employment.

CitySport

CitySport provides a range of sports courses for both young people and adults. It covers provision across Cambridge City and is easy to get booked up. Chesterton offers a range of activities as part of CitySport which can be booked directly with the centre.

Disability Sport

Invigorate and Hopebridge Project

This project is for those accessing Mental health or Homeless services within Cambridge City. The sessions allow reduced rate access in friendly supervised sessions, some of the sessions are even FREE..There is something for everyone..

Gym and swim sessions are offered at Chesterton Sports centre.
